Sigiriya (Lion Rock is an ancient palace located in the central Matale District near the town of Dambulla in the Central Province, Sri Lanka. The name refers to a site of historical and archaeological significance that is dominated by a massive column of rock nearly 200 metres (660 ft) high.<br />
<br />
The ruins of the capital built by the parricidal King Kassapa I (477–95) lie on the steep slopes and at the summit of a granite peak. The 'Lion's Rock', which dominates the jungle from all sides showcases also a series of galleries and staircases emerging from the mouth of a gigantic lion constructed of bricks and plaster.<br />
Sigiriya today is a UNESCO listed World Heritage Site.
